Creepy fortification in Sint-Katelijne-Waver

urbex creepy fortification in Sint-Katelijne-Waver

Last month, I guided Ingrid and Lars from Cosy Travels around Sint-Katelijne-Waver, the Belgian town where the film adaptation of  my supernatural thriller THE STRANGERS OUTSIDE was shot. The result is a series of articles on the Cosy Travels website and an amazing collection of creepy photographs of the World War I fortification that appears in the film.

"I have to admit that it was one of the most bizarre places I had ever seen," Ingrid says. "As soon as we arrived, we could sense an eerie atmosphere, so we were a little hesitant to enter the fortification. We knew that it had been built to stop the Germans from conquering Antwerp and that lots of people were killed here during World War I, but what we found went far beyond our imagination. All the rooms had one thing in common: they all contained one. Single. Chair. Some of which were surrounded by candles. Yes, candles. Seriously, what happened in this place?"

the strangers outside

Two sisters return to their remote holiday cottage after a day at the seaside, but little do they know they're being surrounded. Soon after their arrival, the girls will come face to face with THE STRANGERS OUTSIDE. When the assailants make their intentions known, things take a shocking turn and an intense battle for survival will begin.

  2. Haven't read THE STRANGERS OUTSIDE in a few years but I remember loving the setting, which reminded me of THE FOG and MESSIAH OF EVIL to name a few. I love stories that take place in coastal towns, horror or otherwise. I need to revisit this one!

  7. Wow, what a creepy place! The single chair per room really freaked me out.

Congrats on your book being made into a film. That's very cool.

  8. Very interesting photos! A magazine from my home state, "Weird NJ", often includes visits to abandoned and allegedly haunted houses, hospitals, asylums, etc., and your photos look very similar. Nice and disturbing--I can see why the movie chose to shoot there. Also, I'm now following on Google Friends Connect.

  9. Hello,

Sorry for the late comment. I've recently returned from my Canada trip.

The photos are bloody amazing. I know that if I were to walk into that place I would feel the ghosts. I believe that there are probably plenty of ghosts hidden in those photos.

  19. The Strangers Outside sometimes reminds me of The Fog for its seaside setting, and I imagine Stephen King fans would enjoy the story, it has a certain resonance with King's small town horror tales.
