Best Halloween Stories

What are the best Halloween stories? A Dutch journalist asked himself that question and came up with stories from Stephen King, John Saul… and me :-) According to the article, my book Drowned Sorrow is one of the best stories to read on Halloween.

What do you think are the best Halloween stories and books? Let me know in the comment section below.

  2. And the prize for the best Halloween story ever goes to... Satan's Little Helper. In this movie, a kid becomes unknowingly the helper of a masked serial killer. He thinks that all the murders are fake and just jokes.

  6. Hey Vanessa congrats for the book! I will definitely buy it!
In my opinion, the best Halloween stories are The Halloween Feast by Steven Wedel, The Last Ride by Paul Melniczek and the scariest of all... The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving!

  7. Drowned Sorrow is not the sort of story you should read late at night. I usually don’t get spooked by books; I don’t get truly scared. But then I started reading it after midnight. Do you know how bad of an idea that was? It was an extremely bad idea. I swear, when I was reading it, I thought I was seeing things from the corners of my eyes. For the rest of the night, I refused to leave my room, even when I was dying of thirst :-)

  8. Clifford's First Halloween is one of my favorite Halloween stories. Clifford is a little red puppy -- too small to dress up for Halloween. Your kids will be delighted as Clifford crawls into a pumpkin and becomes a barking jack-o-lantern. Lots of fun!

  11. In Ray Bradbury's The Halloween Tree eight boys set out on a Halloween night and are led into the depths of the past by a tall, mysterious character named Moundshroud. They ride on a black wind to autumn scenes in distant lands and times, where they witness other ways of celebrating this holiday about the dark time of year. This story is a Halloween classic!

  20. The Halloween picture book Los Gatos Black on Halloween will send shivers of delight down the spines of older children who thrive on creepy stories and illustrations. The influence of her childhood in Mexico is reflected in the paintings by illustrator Yuyi Morales. Elements of the Day of the Dead celebration can also be found in the text by author Martha Montes, who was born in Puerto Rico. This picture book would make a wonderful Halloween read-aloud, as well as a read-alone, for 8-12 year olds who love scary stories and pictures. It is scarier than most picture books, which is why I don't recommend it for all ages or all 8-12 year olds.

  21. Another favorite is the Halloween story A TIGER CALLED THOMAS. This charming story by Charlotte Zolotow is about Thomas, a little boy who moves into a "new house on a new street" and never ventures from his front steps because he thinks his neighbors don't like him. Day after day, he watches children playing and neighbors walking by. When Halloween comes, he is surprised to find that his neighbors, children and adults alike, recognize him, despite the tiger mask he hides behind, and want to be friends. He goes home a happy boy.
