Amelie filming locations in Montmartre

amelie filming locations montmartre

I wasn't planning on doing an article on the Amelie filming locations in Montmartre. However, last month, I spent a few days in Paris, and a visit to Montmartre was on top of my list as it's one of my favorite Parisian neighborhoods. Ambling along the picturesque, cobblestone alleys, my local friend kept saying, “This place appeared in Amelie.” As Montmartre is where much of the film occurs, I thought you'd be interested in discovering these Amelie filming locations with me.

In case you haven't seen the film, watch the trailer first.

Le café des Deux Moulins

Le Café des Deux Moulins is the café where Amelie works as a waitress. It's the hotspot for fans of the film. I heard the food is great here. They serve seafood risotto, veal stew, pork chops, tofu skewers, beef tartar, etc. It's also the perfect spot to get a typical French breakfast or to try one of Amelie's favorite deserts, Crème Brulée.

Le Café des Deux Moulins is open each day between 7.30 am and 2 am (Saturdays and Sundays between 8 am and 2 am).

Address: 15 Rue Lepic

Rue Lepic

Each day, Amelie walks along Rue Lepic to go to her job at the Café des Deux Moulins. You can descend that street yourself to enjoy some of the same sights.

Au Marché de la Butte – Maison Collignon

Au Marché de la Butte is Amelie's local grocery store. Her apartment is just behind the corner at 56 Rue des Trois Frères.

Shop owner, Ali, has seen his business boom since the release of the movie. He's not just selling food anymore, but also Amelie posters and postcards. Ali has even released a CD where you can hear him sing and talk about his now famous grocery store.

Address: 65 Rue des Trois Frères

Lamarck-Caulaincourt

This beautiful metro station with the double staircase ascending the hill of Montmartre is where Amelie describes to a blind man the mouthwatering sights of the market on Rue Lamarck. The station opened in 1912 and connects famous Parisian locations such as Place de la Concorde and the National Assembly.

Abbesses metro station

If you continue on Rue Lepic and then go straight on Rue des Abbesses and Rue de la Vieuville, you'll find the Abbesses subway station that often appears in the film. You'll recognize it by its beautiful Art Nouveau entrance.

Studio 28

On Friday evenings, Amelie loves to go to the cinema. Why not do the same on your Friday night in Paris and go to Studio 28?

Address: 10 Rue Tholozé

Sacré Coeur cathedral

Several key moments in Amelie take place around the Sacré Coeur cathedral. This is where she draws blue arrows on the ground to leave Nino on a quest to get his lost photo album back. Even the famous phone booth from the film is there, at the northern end of Rue Mouffettard, though you will have to look hard to find it.

Address: 35 Rue du Chevalier de la Barre

Montmartre is such a lovely Parisian neighborhood that you don't need any famous filming locations to lose yourself in the narrow, winding alleys and to enjoy the views from atop the many stairs.

  2. And hey, I'm doing a movie review blogathan series of posts over at my blog this weekend. Part of it concerns recognizing street and location scenes from my old stomping grounds, Winnipeg.

Okay, so Winnipeg is no Montmartre. Sue me, LOL! "Spirit of place" is "spirit of place."

  6. Love this! I researched and followed in Amelie's footsteps on my first trip to Paris in 2008. On my second trip, I stumbled upon Lamarck-Caulaincourt completely by accident and was thrilled! One of my most favorite (and bizarre) Paris memories is being accosted by a mime at the Café des Deux Moulins bar.
